Today the Western Cape MEC of Finance,
Economic Development and Tourism Alan Winde is expected to visit two
aquaculture companies in the country’s abalone capital, Hermanus.
On the agenda MEC Winde will discuss
the financial and regulatory aid the province is providing to the industry.
Winde said this forms part of a very
important sector being aquaculture and he adds that he feels there is lots of
potential for growth in the sector in the ability for it to create jobs.
“At the moment there are 2 300
people employed in this industry countrywide and we believe there is lots of
opportunity to grow more jobs in this sector, in this province,” added Winde.
He also explained what he will be
doing on the tour today and those include going to learn what the blockages are
and the problems that this component of the aquaculture industry are facing.
He highlights that there are other
areas like oyster framing and mussel farming that he understands and this is
done just so that the MEC can get some better handling in terms of what’s
happening and also so that government knows what red tape issues there are that
need help in order to make this industry grow.
