The Western Cape MEC of Transport and Public Works Robin Carlisle on Tuesday opened the reconstructed R46.

MEC Carlisle said the road will provide an economic injection especially for fruit farmers and tourism in the region.

Other economic benefits will come from the improvement in the transport corridor from the West Coast.

MEC Carlisle explains that this is a very important area in terms of moving out agricultural produce.

“A lot of trucks use the road, we have made the road a lot safer, it costs R260 million and it has been a job that has been in progress and was first commissioned in 2000 and the planning took just over 12 years to complete,” Carlisle added.

He also said that it was however completed in the allocated budget and he is very pleased about it as it is continuing evidence that the province, which has the best roads in South Africa intends to keep it exactly that way.
