The Right to Know campaign will next week be marching for free basic and affordable airtime and data.
Right to Knows Mark Weinberg said the high cost of airtime and data undermines the democratising potential of the mobile network.
Weinberg said that cell phone companies in South Africa are ripping off the public.
“We can’t have what the constitution promises us our freedom of expression, our right to access information, the right to know campaign is launching a struggle to bring down the cost of communication,” said Weinberg.
He added that as R2K they are saying that everyone should get free basic airtime and data the same way we get free basic electricity and water, so that one’s money does not determines one’s rights.
Furthermore he said that the companies must stop making the kind of profits they are making as we have amongst the most expensive airtime and data in the world.
