WC High Court: Closure of Cape Town Refugee Office unlawful

Lusanda Bill
01 October 2013

The Supreme Court of Appeal on Monday found that the closure of Cape Town Refugee Office was unlawful.
The Scalabrini Centre of Cape Town challenged the closure on urgent basis in which the Western Cape High Court in two separate judgments in July last year and March this year, found the closure unlawful.

Scalabrini Centre’s Marilize Ackermann said the Department of Home Affairs did not meet the requirements of public consultation, however this does not mean the office will re-open.
Ackermann added that the judgment means that the department needs to take the decision again in terms of administrative action, and they need to consult properly with the public before they decide to do anything about the office.
