The University of Cape Town has responded to a statement made by the Higher Education Transformation Network regarding the university’s admission policy.

UCT Spokesperson Riana Geldenhuys said race remains a big factor in the university.

The Higher Education Transformation Network said it is dangerous for UCT to carry on with the process of exclusive policy of removing the category of black students on its admission forms.

Geldenhuys said in the new admission policy proposal for University of Cape Town race does remain a factor in assessing disadvantage but it’s not the only factor anymore.

Geldenhuys we are now also taking into consideration factors that impact on student’s national senior certificate performance.

“These are factors such as parental levels of education, the kind of school the applicant may have attended and his or her home language Geldenhuys added.
