Sonke Gender Justice has called on communities to encourage positive discipline by using this week which is Child Protection Week to promote the message of suspending spanking and trying out positive techniques instead.

Sonke Gender Justice’s Patrick Godana said using positive discipline is also a smart way to prevent violence in the long term.

Godana said the research across South Africa and the rest of the world is improving that the inflicting of pain on children is on the run and impact a child social and emotional development.

“It also impedes the cognitive development of a child this why we are taking this opportunity to say stop beating children and start a journey towards positive parenting which it can give us results in terms of child development.” Godana added.
