The Western Cape Department of Education says schools withholding reports cards due to unpaid schools fees will not be tolerated.

The department said any complaints of this nature will be investigated and further action will be taken.

MEC of Education Debbie Schafer in a statement said regardless of a parent’s financial position principles cannot discriminate against learners.

Ministerial Spokesperson Jessica Shelver said schools are not allowed to withhold results for any reason whatsoever.  We appeal to parents to report this practise to their nearest district office, however we also appeal to those parents to try and settle their outstanding fees if they are able to do so.

Shelver said parents are remaindered that schools can take legal action against parents who owe school fees and do not qualify for exemption or partial exemption.

“School fees remain an important source of additional funding in public schools and an SGB has every right to take legal steps to recover these fees” Shelver added.
