889 arrests were made in the
past week in seven provinces in an operation involving the National Joint
Operations and Intelligence Structure.
The police's Vishnu Naidoo said
the biggest arrests were made in KwaZulu-Natal and Gauteng with 278 and 414 respectively.
In the Western Cape 24 people were arrested.
Naidoo added that the majority
of these suspects are foreign nationals that were found without proper
documentation. These foreign nationals will be returned back to their countries
of origins, while the other suspect were arrested in connection with cases
associated with drugs illegal firearms and wanted suspects.
He further said that those
suspects will likely appear in court soon and in most of these cases the state
will oppose bail to ensure successful prosecutions.
