Tributes are continuing to
pour in for the late African National Congress stalwart Ruth Mompati who passed
away in the earlier hours of this morning at the age of 89-years-old.
President Jacob Zuma in a
statement said Ruth has left an immense void in the country.
Presidential Spokesperson
Harold Maloka said President Zuma said that the whole nation is mourning, in
particular those who worked with Mompati in exile to parliament and various
structures of the ANC.
Maloka said we feel an immense
void.
Maloka said she joined the
struggle for liberation of South
Africa when she was a little girl and
continued to serve her country till her last days.
Meanwhile Congress of the
People President Mosiuoa Lekota has described Ruth Mompati as selfless and a
true champion for freedom.
Lekota said Ruth was a mother,
wife, friend, teacher, activist, warrior, negotiator, MP, diplomat, scholar,
Mayor and a bastion of morality.
She was the complete human
being.
Lekota said Ruth was an
outstanding freedom fighter and an educator, hard worker and a very courageous
person.
Lekota said she fought
Apartheid here, she went into exile and came back to continue the rebuilding of
a new South Africa after we negotiated settlement at Codesa.
“She is a very great loss to
our country.” Lekota concluded.
