Three residents of Makhaza in Khayelitsha were arrested for allegedly participating in self-defense justice when five men accused by residents of being involved in criminal activity were beaten and stoned to death.
Two of the men were killed and three others reside in the
hospital with serious injuries from the attack.
Police spokesperson FC van Wyk said an investigation by
members of the Harare police force led to the arrest on Wednesday. Suspects
aged between 27 and 32, were still in custody and are expected to appear in
Khayelitsha Magistrates’ Court today for murder and attempted murder. He also
further stated the police strongly condemn the act of vigilance in our
communities and encourage them to report any criminal activity to the police so
that the law can take its course.
Neighborhood councilor Danile Khatshwa said kangaroo courts
were spreading to different parts of the area, as residents believed police
were inundated with crime. He said that while he understood the community’s
frustrations, he did not tolerate mob justice.
