Capetonians to adhere to COVID-19 protocols at funerals

The City of Cape Town has called for increased adherence to health protocols. New infections have slowed down in the metro and there has been a slight decrease in burials. During the past week there were 547 burials compared to 649 in the previous week. This is a decrease of 102 burials

According to City figures, the busiest cemeteries were Klip with 154 burials, Maitland cemetery with 139, and Welmoed cemetery with 113 burials

The City’s mayco member for community services and health, Zahid Badroodien, says there’s been an increase in the demand for cremations, having cremated 150 deceased in the past week. At the same time, he appealed to mourners to follow COVID-19 protocols, as the City Health reported only 72% adherence rate in the past week

‘’It is disheartening that funeral protocol adherence continues to be problematic. These events could become super spreaders if we’re not vigilant,’ said Badroodien.
