During the winter school break about 31 Western Cape schools were burglared and vandalised.

Western Cape Education Department spokesperson Bronagh Casey said they are currently waiting for the cost of damage to eleven schools.

The department has urged community members to be more vigilant.

Casey said the current estimation of the cost of damage of 20 of the schools are R154 000.

She added that in many of the cases perpetrators targeted electric cables and copper pipes.

In another three incidents toilets were targeted and the schools kitchens were targeted in three separate incidents.

Casey said the most serious case happened at a primary school in the Cape Winelands where a classroom was vandalised.
