It has emerged that 50 girls were sent home from Wynberg High School on Monday for having braids.
The Western Cape Education Department’s Paddy Attwell said they will be investigating the matter.
He added that the department has done an initial investigation and some of the department officials have spoken to some of the girls involved and to the school.
Attwell said it appears that about 50 girls were in fact sent from the school for having braids after the holidays.
Allegations of verbal abuse by a teacher were also reported.
Attwell said at this stage it looks as though there was verbal abuse and the teacher concerned has denied the racial comments.
The department is still continuing to investigate the incident.
