The Democratic Alliance wants the Police Minister Nathi Mthethwa to start taking the issue of rural safety seriously.

DA`s Shadow Minister of Police Dianne Kohler Barnard says they have made repeated calls for rural safety units to be established but the Minister has done nothing.

She said that she has written to Minister Mthethwa this year urging him to establish a specialised Border and Rural Safety division within the SAPS that will be tasked with targeting and combating crime in rural areas.

She added that the high number of farm attacks and murders are a result of the Ministers` failure to establish an effective strategy to address rural safety.
