The South African Youth Council today announced its plans to march against the school closures in the Western Cape. SAYC member Lungisa Mzizana said “The reason for the march is that we have not had any programmatic solutions from the government in response to youth unemployment”

Mzizana proclaimed that the proposed closing of 27 Western Cape schools will feed the province’s youth unemployment problem.

Roscoe Jacobs of the Hangberg Education and Development put forward that schools with bad attendance or pass rates could be “turned around” rather than simply closed down.

Jacobs is furthermore concerned that the closure of “unsuccessful” schools will set a precedent for the government to glibly shut down other “underperforming” community facilities such as clinics.

The march will take place in Keizersgracht, Cape Town on Thursday at .
