Western Cape Premier, Helen Zille wrote a letter to President Jacob Zuma requesting that an army be deployed to gang affected areas like Hanover Park and Lavender Hill in Cape Town.
The Defence Department on Monday said there were legal processes involved before the army can be deployed inside the country's borders.
The department's Siphiwe Dlamini said if President Jacob Zuma has received Premier Helen Zille's request, he would contact the ministry directly.
In recent weeks there seems to be an increase in gang-related deaths in the Western Cape.
