Caster Semenya won South Africa’s sixth medal at the London Olympics when she ran second in the 800-metre women's final last night. Semenya, the 2009 world champion, crossed the line in one minute, 57-point-.23 seconds.

The race was won by Mariyah Savinova of Russia in one minute 56-point-19 seconds with Russia’s Ekaterine Poistogova in third place.

Semenya had qualified fastest for the final and observers were puzzled by the way she ran the final in last place until it was almost too late to catch the front runners.

Experts say that had Semenya started her sprint just 50 metres sooner she could have taken the gold medal.
