SA’s military veterans have high hopes that the payout programme for destitute members will ease their plight.
The benefits apply only to certain military veterans.
Those deemed suitable will receive housing and transport subsidies, assistance with health care, educational bursaries for dependents, and skills training for the unemployed.
The department says there is a 126 million Rand budget for the programme in 2012/13.
About 57 000 veterans are expected to register for the programme.
