The Western Cape Department of Home Affairs said claims of corruption have been levelled against the head of security at its Customs House refugee centre.

The Department’s Yusuf Simons said this has resulted in the officer being fired.

This follows numerous incidents at the centre including water being flung at refugees waiting in line which caused outrage in the city, with Mayoral Committee Member for Safety and Security JP Smith calling the treatment of refugees disgusting.

Simons said the department of Home Affairs is employing a security company to manage security at the refugee centre.
He added that the company will be asked to remove the official while the allegations are being investigated.
