A man drowned in Witsand

On Wednesday afternoon the National Sea Rescue Institute in Witsand and volunteer sea rescue duty crew, the SA Police Services and WC Government Health EMS responded to Riverside, Witsand, following reports of a drowning in progress.

NSRI Spokesperson Craig Lambinon said on arrival on scene it was found that a group of people from a local farm community had been enjoying a day at the river when an adult male got into difficulty in the water.

Lambinon said a 28 year old male, who was part of the same group, had gone into the water to assist the man in difficulty but he is believed to have gotten into difficulty himself before disappearing under water.

Lambinon added that the body of the man was discovered and handed into the care of the Forensic Pathology Services, Police have opened an inquest docket and family are being assisted by Police trauma counselors.
