The
City of Cape Town has promised to continue to provide disaster relief
aid to more than 1 500 people left destitute by a
fire in the ‘Agstelaan’ informal settlement in Valhalla Park on Monday 23 December 2013 .
The City had
stopped assisting the residents on Thursday, after a protest had ensued with
residents demanding proper houses from the City.
The Disaster Risk
Management Centre Spokesperson Wilfred Johannes-Solomons said the City of Cape Town is committed to
finding a solution to the issues raised and will once more engage with the
community today to find the way forward.
Meanwhile a number
of shacks were gutted with fire this morning in Khayelitsha informal
settlements.
Fire and Rescue
Services Spokesperson Theo Layne said no one was injured in the fire and the
cause of the fire is not yet known.
Layne further said
police and fire-fighters are still at the scene.
