Stellenbosch University lecturer suspended over alleged racist sms

The University of Stellenbosch has temporarily relieved a nuclear physics lecturer after he sent a racist sms to a black student.

The Sociology student and member of the activist group Open Stellenbosch, Sikhulekile Duma laid a racism compliant after the student last Saturday received a racist text written in Afrikaans.

The university will now conduct an investigation into the matter concerning Dr Anton Stander.

Spokesperson for the University of Stellenbosch Martin Viljoen said the University views the matter in a very serious light as any such remarks or acts of behaviour are unacceptable and not in line with the University’s values.

Viljoen said the necessary steps in line with the University’s formal disciplinary procedures have been initiated and the matter will be handled decisively and fairly. A committee of preliminary investigations will now investigate the allegations and the University will act in a accordance with the committee’s findings.
