The Higher Education and Training Network said in a statement that it has noted with grave concern the recent revelations of racism and abuse aimed at black students at Stellenbosch University.

This comes after a multitude of racist incidents at several of the historically white universities including the University of Pretoria, North-West University and the University of Cape Town and others were revealed.

HETN Alumni Support Director, Hendrick Makaneta said the HETN is of the firm opinion that the time has come for the Department of Higher Education to exercise bold leadership and abandon the approach it has adopted towards the historically white institutions.

Makaneta said, “We are saying these universities belong to all the students. Language must be used to the exclusion of other students.”
