Twelve vagrants who have been living in the Bantry Bay caves have been arrested by the City’s Displaced Persons Unit(DPU).
This after the Unit recovered stolen goods which included identity documents, handbags and other items.
Wayne Aldridge, Acting Head of the DPU, said the arrests were the result of public vigilance and the willingness of local residents to bring matters of concern to the attention of the Metro Police.
In a statement, Aldrige says: “There has been an increase in crime in the area since an informal dwelling was set up on the rocks at Bantry Bay. The 12 people being detained at the Sea Point Police Station were arrested in terms of the by-law relating to Streets, Public Places and the Prevention of Noise Nuisances.
Spokesperson for the Special Services Department, Neil Arendse , says they encourage the public to keep them informed by contacting the Specialised Law Enforcement Services toll free number 0800 225 669.
