Police shot dead more suspects in the year to April than in any other year over the past decade says the Independent Complaints Commission.

Figures by the ICD reveal that 556 suspects, including 32 innocent bystanders, were shot and killed by police between April last year and March this year.

The media reported that the highest-ever recorded number of shootings of civilians is 763 in 1985, the year that marked the start of South Africa's five-year state of emergency.
