The Ekurhuleni Metropolitan
Municipality has warned people who decide to illegally invade land that they
will face prospects of being evicted or arrested.
Several people have been
invading land belonging to the Council around Ekurhuleni specifically in
Tembisa. EMM spokesperson Lebogang Ramashala said fighting the
scourge of land invasions requires joint participation of all stakeholders and
members of the public.
Ramashala said the reason why
we are discouraging people from spotting a piece of land and deciding to go
settle on it is that, it could actually pose a danger to themselves.
She further said as people are
aware Ekurhuleni is formally a mining city so a lot of the land is either
dolomitic or it lies on top of old mines.
“A lot of the land that is
occupied illegally is found to be laying either on the flood line or is water
locked, so when there are rains and floods it increases the chances of those
households succumbing to disaster” Ramashala added.
