The City of Cape Town’s Special investigation Unit has arrested a corn artist who has been impersonating a traffic officer as part of a scam to extort payment for traffic fine.

Mayoral Committee member for Safety and Security, JP Smith said residents had reported a traffic fine scam to the City, prompting an investigation.

Smith said this suspect has served time in prison for the same crime in previous occasions.

Smith urged community members to report immediately to the City any suspicious behaviours or schemes to get these culprits and lock them.

He added that the suspect is someone they’ve been looking for, for quite some time, and officers have been going to different addresses which they have tried tracking him at, on multiple occasions and eventually they have been able to arrest the 60-year-old man in Mitchells Plain on Friday morning.

Smith concluded by saying that residents reported that he would approach them with a claim that he could settle out some traffic fines for a small amount , but he could never settle these of course, not having the ability to do so and this caused a lot of complaints to the City.
