SAPS arrested nearly 14 000 suspects in a week

 Operation Shanela and have arrested 13 691 suspects last Monday 2 September to Sunday

With detectives and crime intelligence tracing operations, roadblocks including stops and searches.

The following arrests were made

·        1 953 wanted suspects for murder, rape, possession of illegal firearms and business robberies were arrested.

·        149 were arrested for murder and 53 were arrested in KwaZulu Natal.

·        91 suspects were arrested for rape, 76 of them were arrested in KwaZulu Natal.

·        The possession of illegal firearms 161 suspects were arrested

·        1 536 were arrested for assault.

·        576 were arrested for illegal dealing in liquor, 156 arrests were made in Mpumalanga while 147 were in KwaZulu Natal. 271 drug dealers were arrested.

·        404 suspects were arrested for drunk driving in Western Cape 107 drivers and 54 in Gauteng.

·        1 460 suspects were arrested for possession of drugs, 622 arrests were made in Western Cape.

Under recoveries and confiscation successes

·        137 firearms were confiscated 30 of these firearms were confiscated during police operation in the Eastern Cape, 27 in the Western Cape and 26 in KwaZulu Natal.

·        5 922 ammunition were confiscated. 4 845 were confiscated in Western Cape and 1 034 in Gauteng.

·        53 hijacked and stolen cars were successfully recovered during police operations

 

Major takedown highlights

·        6 cash in transit armed robbers were killed in Germiston.

·        3 kidnappers were arrested in Gauteng and 1 pakistani businessman was rescued.

·        3 alleged extortionists were shot and killed at the NIU base in Mthatha following an attack on NIU members of the police units base.

·        6 extortionists were shot and killed in Durban through confrontation with police officials.

·        59 illegal miners, 2 trucks and 1 tractor loader backhoe (TLB) was seized in Limpopo during Operation Vala Umgodi.

·        An insurance fraud suspect was arrested for killing his son and 2 cousins for insurance pay outs.

·        In Mpumalanga the suspect who raped and killed an 11 year old girl was arrested.
