Newly-elected Chairperson of the AU Commission Nkosazana Dlamini Zuma joined thousands of women in celebrating National Women’s Day .
She attended celebrations at the Union Buildings in Pretoria where President Jacob Zuma delivered a keynote address.
In 1956 over 20 000 women led by Lillian Ngoyi, Helen Joseph, Sophie de Bruyn and Amina Cachalia marched to the Union Buildings to demand an end to the pass laws system.
A memorial site was unveiled in honour of Lillian Ngoyi.
