The Western Cape Education Department is investigating claims that some schools are charging parents admission fees or deposits to secure a place for their children.

The department has stated that it is illegal for schools to be charging admission fees.

The department spokesperson Bronagh Casey said the relevant schools have been notified about the relevant legal framework which regulates payment of school fees.

Schools involved in such cases have been told to correct the situation.
