The National Union of Mineworkers believe the violent protests at Lonmin's Marikana mine in the North West province were sparked by wage bargaining processes being undermined.

The violent protest started on Friday last week and more than ten people have lost their lives, including two police officers.

On Thursday evening more clashes were reported and a number of people are believed to have died as Emergency Services were busy transporting the injured.

NUM provincial Spokesperson Lesiba Seshoka said that similar problems occurred at the Impala Platinum mine where the company unilaterally adjusted wages for certain employee categories while excluding others.
