The cause of a fire that started at a holiday house in St Francis Bay in the Eastern Cape on Christmas Day is not yet known.

Authorities said the fire at the thatch-roofed house spread to another home as a result of fierce winds.

According to reports one house has been gutted and four others damaged. The house was being rented by a Johannesburg couple and their friends from Canada.

They all escaped unharmed.

About 20 homes were evacuated as a safety measure and fire fighters managed to extinguish the blaze in a space of an hour.

The fire comes just a month after 76 homes were destroyed when a fire broke out at the Royal Wharf.
