Groote Schuur Hospital’s Acute Spinal Cord injury Unit today said they have admitted and treated about seven patients every year who sustain severe neck injuries caused by diving.

Western Cape Communications Officer at Groote Schuur Hospital Alaric Jacobs said they are expecting an increase this year of cases of severe neck injuries due to diving incidents since this month they have admitted four patients already.

Jacobs has more said at swimming pools or beaches, divers should dive into the water feet first.

“With head first diving with stretched-out arms or not, it is extremely risky; if they do it properly, diving accidents can be prevented” he added.
