Two fire-fighters died while fighting a blaze at a building in Market Street in the early hours of Sunday morning.

Paramedics were called to the scene.

When they arrived, one fire-fighter had already been treated for smoke inhalation, ER24 spokesperson Werner Vermaak said the paramedics were told that another fire-fighter and his colleague were still trapped in the building.

Vermaak said at about 1am a fighter-fighter was brought out but unfortunately had showed no signs of life and paramedics initiated CPR. Sadly he succumbed to his injuries.

Vermaak added that at about 3am the second fighter-fighter was brought from the building but also showed no signs of life and sadly due to his injuries there was nothing more paramedics could do and he was declared dead on the scene.

“Four other fire-fighters were treated on the scene for various injuries and were transported to a nearby hospital for further treatment.” Vermaak concluded.

The exact cause to the incident will remain the subject of a police investigation.
