The man accused of the murder of Jerobiojin van Wyk is finally undergoing a mental evaluation.
Daniel Smit has finally been given a bed at the Valkenberg Psychiatric Hospital in Cape Town.
Smit was arrested last year after human remains were found in sewerage pipes at his home. He faces charges of murder, attempted murder, kidnapping and defeating the ends of justice among others. Smit allegedly killed Van Wyk for stealing mangoes from his garden.
He was referred for psychiatric evaluation last
year, but there were no beds available.
Smit will now be evaluated by a panel of psychiatrists and psychologists to determine whether he is accountable. The case has been postponed to 6 September 2023
