The South African Transport and Allied Workers Union has embarked on a nationwide strike against Freshmark.

This is the trucking company that is owned by Shoprite/Checkeers.

The strike has to do with dispute over wage increase and the refusal of the employer to return to the centralized bargaining process.

SATAWU Spokesperson Vincent Masoga said currently the employer offers a ridiculous 8.5% that they have imposed to the Checkers employees.

Masoga said SATAWU flatly refuses Freshmark’s offer and demands a 15% increase on the table and that they must be part of the centralized bargaining process.

Masoga said the employer must also renege from diving workers by offering the non-unionized workers a double-digit offer in exclusion of other workers.

“We view this as union bashing and it must be dealt with harshly Masoga added.
