BioVac lab, Pinelands fire extinguished

The City of Cape Town says a fire that broke out at Biovac laboratory in the early hours of Sunday morning in Pinelands has nothing to do with an attempt to sabotage COVID-19 vaccine rollout in the Western Cape.

The blaze broke out just before 5a.m and fire crews extinguished the fire just before 8a.m

“There is no evidence that this was an attempted attack on COVID-19 vaccine stores as being speculated, since preliminary investigations suggest the fire’s origin relates to a HVAC fault, due to the prompt response of our Fire Services only a separate building suffered damage while the laboratory itself was completely protected,” said City’s Mayco member for safety and security, JP Smith.

The City said that suggestions that the Biovac Lab’s COVID-19 stores were targeted in an attack are malicious, and have urged the public to refrain from spreading misinformation.

“It is imperative that we reject the notion of those spreading fake news and false claims through social media, as it spreads unnecessary fear,” he said.
