Slight increase in Cape burials in past 7 days

There’s been a slight increase at Cape Town cemeteries in the past seven days.

410 people were buried in the past week, compared to 390 the previous week.

Maitland cemetery had 108 burials, Klip Road 96 and Welmoed cemetery had 86 burials.

‘’Our cemeteries are managing the demand currently. The City cannot, however, indicate with certainty how many of these were Covid-19 burials, as the cause of death is often either listed as natural or non-natural causes. The City continues to engage with undertakers and other stakeholders in this area to ensure that we are able to assist them where necessary,’’ said City’s Mayoral Committee Member for Community Services and Health, Zahid Badroodien.

Meanwhile, the City’s Environmental Health Practitioners says they are concerned about increased non-compliance with Covid-19 protocols at funerals.

‘’We remind the public to please adhere to the protocols, for their own safety. Funeral gatherings are considered super-spreader events, and at a time when our health system is taking strain, it is imperative that we all play our part in ensuring that we mitigate the risk of infection,’’ added Badroodien.
