A police warder was shot after a prisoner who was brought in for x-rays escaped from the Livingstone Hospital in Port Elizabeth.

“The prisoner asked permission to go to the toilet and managed to get his hands on a firearm, which had been smuggled into the hospital,” says police spokesperson Sizwe Kupelo.

He escaped with several accomplices in a getaway car.

The warder was shot in the pelvis and is in a stable condition.

Meanwhile, ten prisoners in Cape Town have been accounted for after the police vehicle they were travelling in overturned.

It is alleged that the prisoners tried to destabilise the vehicle as it went around a corner on it’s way to the Parow Magistrate’s Court.

The prisoners were allegedly taxi drivers who had been arrested last week and were due to appear in court for various traffic offences.
