Western Cape MEC of Education Debbie Schafer said she is opposed to the current proposal of a single subject textbook.

This as the Department of Basic Education has proposed that there be a single textbook per subject per learner which is intended to bring down the cost of textbooks.

MEC Schafer said the proposal is filled with difficulties.

Ministerial Spokesperson Jessica Shelver said it is my view that having a choice of excellent textbooks, with excellent teachers, is the best way to address inequalities.

“In any state monopoly on the dissemination of information is inherently undesirable. The DBE controls the curriculum they should not also control exactly how it is taught,” Shelver added.
