The Higher Education and Transformation Network said it plans to take University of Cape Town to court for it’s newly admissions policy which it believes does not advance transformation in Higher Education.

Executive Chairperson Lucky Thekisho said the policy will demean black and women applicants.

The changes to the 2016 University of Cape Town redress and diversity admissions policy has three elements that include set of minimum academic achievement levels for entry.

Thekiso said Academic freedom does not include the right to keep the higher educational playing field tilted to perpetuate subordination nor does it represent the right of a privileged elite to act as exclusive gatekeepers of a publicly funded institution.

“We call on all roleplayers in higher education to utilize the courts to enforce Constitutional principles on errant higher education Administrators who continue to pay scant respect to the letter of the Constitution of the Republic Thekiso added.

Meanwhile the University of Cape Town responded by stating that the university has not received no direct communications from HETN about plans to initiate legal action against the university.
