WC Health MEC announces intervention for surgeries

The Western Cape Health Minister, Theuns Botha, on Thursday announced an innovative intervention to address the problem of long waiting lists for hip- and knee replacements.

This system, which is based on an electronic central platform, will link all facilities in the province where elective joint surgery takes place.

Ministerial Spokesperson Helene Rossouw said 300 surgeries will be done in the next year and electronic data base has been created for people who are need of urgent surgery.

Rossouw added that these people will be people who have with no mobility, people who are in wheelchairs or have crutches, unable to work and in need of help in eating, people who are really urgent need of surgery.
