Police officers who lose firearms will be fired

Lusanda Bill
7 December 2010

Police Minister Nathi Mthethwa has warned that officers who recklessly lose their firearms over and over again will be fired from the South African Police Service.

Mthethwa said in a written reply to a parliamentary question that the SAPS lost 3,453 and recovered 1,210 firearms in the 2009/10 period. There were 8,498 civilian firearms lost and just 3,985 recovered.

The Minister said “Firearms form part of the resources that are given to police in order to enable them to fight crime effectively. Part of the responsibility is to ensure that those who are allocated these resources handle them with caution and utmost responsibility”.

Police Minister Nathi Mthethwa has urged people to be careful and ensure that their firearms do not end up in the wrong hands.
