Decrease in job losses in the clothing and textile sector welcomed

The South African Clothing and Textiles Workers Union has welcomed the decrease in job losses in the clothing, textile and leather industries.

The union’s Job Loss Database has shown that from December 2010 to December 2013 the rate of job losses in the industry has declined by 66%.

Sactwu Spokesperson Simon Eppel said last there was almost 3 500 jobs lost in the industry.  A number of years ago particularly in the mid 2000 we were seeing almost 16 000 jobs being lost.

Eppel said this decrease means that the jobs of clothing and textile workers in the country are more secure.  Obviously the loss of any job is highly problematic, but it certainly shows that the work done my national government over the last five years to stabilise the industry is paying off.
