Fishing rights allocations has been a sour spot for the Department of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries.

In January Public Protector Thuli Mandonsela investigated allegations that fishing rights were unfairly awarded.

The department has in recent weeks been in talks with fisherman regarding these fishing rights allocations.  Minister of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries Tina Joemat-Pettersson has announced several interventions to make the allocation process easier, including extending the appeals period and embarking on a listening exercise.

Ministerial Spokesperson Palesa Mokomele said in order to accommodate all the applicants the Minister has extended the deadline to the end of April this year.
