The North West Premier Thandi Modise during her State of the Province address she said the continuous recruitment of traffic officers in the Province has resulted in a decrease of road fatalities by 25 percent in over the past five years, from 940 in 2009 to 748 in 2013.

Premier’s Spokesperson Moses Kgwele said in an effort to intensify traffic law enforcement operations and increasing visibility of law enforcement officers to reduce the number of road accidents and fatalities on all major roads of the province, the Provincial Government has successfully increased traffic officers from about 550 to 750 including municipal traffic authorities over the past five years.

Kgwele further said the Provincial Government has moved progressively towards implementation of the UN Decade of Action for Road Safety 2011-2020 which is aimed at reducing deaths and injuries across the World.

“In order to deal head-on with the rate of fatalities and ensuring that the roads are safe and secured, Modise reported the province has further established specialized teams such as the Jaws, Highway Patrols and Speed Teams” added Kgwele.
