Housing authorities began distributing 1000 key inserts on Sunday, to the residents of the N2 Gateway complex. The distributing of the keys comes after three tenants were robbed in recent weeks.
Ten security guards have been placed on the day and night shifts to strengthen security. This comes after a number if break-ins sparked fears that criminals could be using the standard keys to gain access to the units.
Housing ministry spokesperson Monwabesi Maclean says that the original standard keys opened the doors to all 705 units. Last week residents refused to pay their rent if the duplication of the keys was not sorted put.
The key duplication debacle is the latest controversy to the housing project since it was launched in 2005.
