The second day of the 12th Media Kidocracy Konference started with participants eager to engage with each other on the different topics on the programme,

Which were youth right and civic participation, economic freedom for youth, who am I- a youth understanding of gender and identity, the use of social media for self expression, my body my choice, and my future my world that was debated.

The first debate dealt with youth right and civic participation with the panellists being Karen Devlin- WIMPS, Colleen Ryan-Democratic Development Programme.  Colleen Ryan said the youth does not know the power they hold but more importantly the responsibility that comes with having that power.

The debate became intense when we moved to economic freedom for the youth.  One of the delegates Luke Mtwetwe said we can only achieve economic freedom if we are all equal in this country.  A representative from the National Development Agency Molvonia Cupido also shared what NYDA does and the entrepreneurship opportunities that delegates can embrace.

The third debate of the day was Who am I- a youth understanding of gender and identity.  Darcell van Buuren from Gender Steps gave her insight on what gender.  The delegates debated on discrimination that still exits in our society in regards with a person’s sexuality.

Express yourself – the use of social media for self expression was the fourth topic for the day.  Bush Radio’s Programme Integrator Adrian Louw and WIMPS representative Davy Simms were part of the panel.  Most delegates at the conference were shocked to release that what they put on the internet is not a secret.

The discussion moved to another topic which was My Body – My Choice.  A heated debated came when the delegates spoke about abortion.  Some were for abortion depending on the situation and some were against abortion, saying regardless of the situation abortion is wrong.

The final discussion of the day dealt with My future world – focusing on conservation – raising the green flag.  Daniel Hector from Lotus River High told the delegates that we must stop condemning the policies that government comes up with which are destroying the planet.  Hector urged everyone to tread lightly on the planet.  Nakita January from Princess Vlei organisation said it’s our responsibility to save the planet and not government.

This is what Ashley Leonard one of the delegates said about his impression of the conference so far “What I have learnt at MKK is I got the chance to meet new people and I got chance to learn more about the media.  So far i am enjoying the food, games and chats that I have had with new friends.  The fun has only begun”
