A 47-year-old man died after he was swept out to sea by strong rip currents at Port Edward and drowned.

The National Sea Rescue Institute Spokesperson Craig Lambinon said the family of the deceased has been notified and are receiving support from the police.

Lambinon said they started with the CPR but the members declared the man deceased at the scene and police have opened an inquest docket.

He added that it is suspected that the man was caught in rip current.
