The Democratic Alliance has called for the reinstatement of the specialised gang unit.

This follows after three people were killed in a suspected gang shooting in Hanover Park over the weekend.

DA Spokesperson on Community Safety Mireille Wenger said an effective means to address violence caused by gangsterism and substance abuse, amongst others is through specialised units.

Wenger said according to the South African Police Service, gang activity accounted for 18.22% of the total murders and was the highest contributor of attempted murders at 32.3% last year in the Western Cape. These statistics however do not account for the fear and disruption that these violent acts have caused

“Focussed and dedicated resources are what is needed if we are to reign in gang-related crime and violence.” Wenger added.
